Mukama Morandi

It is with great regret, that we announced that Justin Kalikawe passed away recently. We have set up a tribute to our dearly departed friend. Please take a moment and visit the Justin Kalikawe Tribute Page. He lived in Bukoba Tanzania. He was a well-seasoned veteran musician and a music production powerhouse in his own right. In most of his albums, he wrote his own music, played most of the instruments, and sang the songs himself.

His message is always of great wisdom, culminating from his clan, the ‘Bahaya’ of north western Tanzania. Sometimes he warned people about gossip, sometimes he warned people about AIDS. He also sang about how to live together in peace as neighbors. It is very refreshing walking in Bukoba town listening to small kids singing one of Kalikawe’s songs. “Junomwatani nawaijakujune” meaning help your neighbor so that he can help you in the future.

Kalikawe has produced more than 5 albums. On most of these albums he sings in Swahili and Kihaya. This way, he communicated with a large number of people in his native Bukoba and the whole of East Africa at large. We will all truly miss him.

Overall, Kalikawe is a man of the people and he is viewed as such in Tanzania. This is evident when looking at his past accomplishments in music business.

Ugenini was a song he specifically wrote for Bongoland. There will be a music video version of it available on DVD. Was filmed by Kibirafilms in Bukoba, Tanzania in January 2003. A great song that makes every one think when confronted with decision of staying in a foreign land or going home.

Martin Ubwe, also from Tanzania, has been a musician for a very long time. He started when he lived in Tanzania. After moving to the US, he has collaborated with a lot of musicians to produce various albums. His album “Nyumbani” meaning home, has extensively been used in the Bongoland soundtrack. Martin also owns a music-recording studio in Minneapolis Minnesota.

Mukama Morandi is an accomplished musician in his own right. He has produced one album. “Mukama”. He pursues music interest and plays in a local band here in Minneapolis. He has future plan of releasing more music. “Turn Back Time”, the song on the Bongoland soundtrack is one of the songs from his original album
